Members area NRR club run safety

Run smart.
Run safe.

Our practical safety guidance for Wednesday club runs and member-led sessions. Follow these and look after each other.

Running from UoN on Wednesday evening

01

Learn the route

Each week, on Monday or Tuesday, we'll let you know the route we'll be running — through the newsletter and on Facebook.

  • Read the directions before you arrive.
  • Print a copy if you'd like one to carry.
  • It's down to you to know the route — or to run with others who do.
02

Find someone to run with

Please find at least one person to run with — at a pace you can manage — before the route is announced. We discourage anyone from running alone.

  • Can't find someone? Ask for help before the warmups.
  • Run with a group at a pace you can hold for the full distance.
  • If you can't, move to a slower group — no shame, no fuss.
03

Respect your fellow runners

Please try to be aware who is running with you. The group is only a group when it sticks together.

  • Try to keep your whole group together.
  • Slow down if you're moving ahead.
  • Watch behind for anyone struggling.
04

Stick to a safe route

If you're not confident in following the route, or in keeping up with your group, please follow the 2.5 mile route, or the trim trail, in the area around the campus.

05

Run safely on the roads

  • In winter, wear high-vis clothing and head or chest lights.
  • When crossing roads, use pedestrian crossings.
  • Don't simply follow the crowd — make your own decision.
06

NRR vs. member-led runs

Wednesday UoN-organised sessions are official NRR sessions.

Sessions away from the UoN are organised by members on an informal, volunteer basis to give NRR members more choice.

All runs that take place in the dark, and/or held away from the UoN, are run at your own risk.

Winter essentials

Head torch, chest light, hi-vis vest or jacket. When the clocks change in autumn we expect everyone on club night to be lit up — even the routes that feel safe in daylight are surprisingly dark in winter. If you've forgotten yours, the welcome team usually has a spare.
