Beginners & Couch-to-5K in NorthamptonStart where
you are.
Never run before? Haven't run for years? Ended parkrun last week and thought "I could do more of this"? Northampton Road Runners is built to welcome you. No experience, no minimum pace, no judgement — just friendly people who once stood exactly where you're standing now.

Fast Track to 5K — our beginners' programme
Twice a year — usually in spring and autumn — Northampton Road Runners runs a Fast Track to 5K programme designed for complete beginners. It's structured, coached and free of charge. Over roughly 10 weeks you'll go from a run-walk of a few minutes to a full 5K without stopping, all in a small supportive group of people at exactly your level. It's the same programme people usually know as "Couch to 5K" — just delivered in person, in Northampton, by qualified England Athletics leaders in running fitness, with the whole club cheering you on.
You don't need any special kit — trainers, comfortable clothes, a water bottle. You don't need to be fit before you start. You don't even need to be sure you'll enjoy it. Come to the first session, see how you feel, decide from there. Details of the next intake are posted on the events page and shared in the WhatsApp group.
Already running a bit? Just come along
Fast Track is for people starting from zero. If you can already jog a slow mile or two — maybe you've done a parkrun, or ran a bit during lockdown — you can skip Fast Track and come straight to a Wednesday club night. There's a slow pace group every single week and it's a non-negotiable club value that nobody gets left behind. You'll finish your first Wednesday having run two or three miles at a pace that suits you, chatted the whole way, and probably made a couple of new friends.
If the idea of turning up to a club night for the first time feels intimidating (it does for everybody), read our Plan your first Wednesday page — it tells you exactly where to park, what to wear, and who to look for when you arrive. No surprises.
Common worries — honest answers
"I'll be the slowest there and hold everyone up."
You won't. Every Wednesday has multiple pace groups — genuinely from 3:44/km at the front down to walk-run 7:27/km at the back. The slow group is one of the most sociable groups on any Wednesday. If a runner has to peel off to walk for a bit, another member walks with them. It's how the club works.
"I've never run further than a bus stop."
Then Fast Track to 5K is the right entry point. It genuinely takes complete non-runners to running 5K continuously in about 10 weeks. Loads of members started there.
"Do I have to be a member to come to Fast Track?"
No. Fast Track is open to non-members and it's free. Most people join the club at the end of the programme once they know they'll keep running — but there's no pressure to join upfront.
"When's the next Fast Track intake?"
Check the events page or drop an email to membership@northamptonroadrunners.co.uk. There's usually one starting in the March/April window and another in September/October.
