Marathon training in NorthamptonTwenty-six miles
doesn't run itself.
Whether it's your first marathon or your fastest, Northampton Road Runners has the routes, the long-run group and the club-mates to get you to the start line ready. From London to Manchester to Rome, our members line up at every major marathon each year — and we train together for every one of them.
What marathon training looks like at NRR
A marathon needs a plan. At Northampton Road Runners that plan revolves around two anchor sessions each week — a Wednesday club night starting from the University of Northampton's Waterside Campus (6:45pm sharp, multiple pace groups every time), and a Sunday long run that scales from 8 miles up to a full 20 or 22 as your marathon approaches. Members share plans in the WhatsApp long-run group, so whether you're training for London in April, Manchester in April, Chicago in October or the local Milton Keynes marathon in May, there's always a group heading out at your pace.
Beyond the two anchors, members run when they can — an easy 5 or 6 miles most mornings, a track session on a Tuesday for the sub-3 chasers, a hills session or tempo run whenever it fits the plan. The club doesn't dictate — it enables. You bring the goal, we bring the routes, the company and the collective knowledge of 220+ runners who between them have finished nearly every UK marathon there is.
First marathon? Sub-3? Somewhere in between?
Marathon training at Northampton Road Runners scales to whoever's running. If it's your first, you'll find people who ran their first marathon last year and remember exactly how nervous you feel. If you're chasing a Good For Age time or a Championship qualifier for London, there's a small group of members who've broken 3:00 and know the plan intimately. Pace groups on Sunday range from 3:44/km at the sharp end down to walk-run 7:27/km for anyone building distance. Same start point, same route options, different paces — everyone runs back together.
If you want a genuinely honest opinion on whether marathon training is right for you this year, come to a Wednesday club night and ask around. It's the fastest way to work out if the marathon is your race — the members are enthusiastic, direct, and won't sell you a plan you're not ready for.
